How much mulch do I need?

Before finding out how much mulch will fit in your truck, you will need to figure out exactly how much mulch your landscaping project requires.

A 2-inch depth of organic mulch is perfect for retaining moisture and keeping weeds at bay. Be careful though, you don’t want to put down too much.

When putting down mulch, more is not better than less. The roots of the plant need air to keep them alive. If the layer of mulch is too deep the plants won’t survive. Too much mulch will also cause the water to “roll-off” the top of the mulch instead of getting down to the plant’s roots.

To determine how many yards of mulch you need, first, figure out the square footage of the spot where the mulch will go. Multiply the width by the length to get that number. You now have the square footage. 1 “yard” covers an area 324 square feet at 1-inch depth.

So the formula is “Square feet x depth of mulch divided by 324 = yards needed.“

Refer to the chart below for help. Keep in mind, you may not be able to buy in .5 yard increments so round up to the next number.
